Biography
Marialy grew up in a musical family in Havana, studying and excelling in
classical piano from the age of 7. It was not until the age of 20 that she
experimented for the fi rst time with jazz, entering and winning first prize
in the 2000 Jo Jazz competition, presided over Chucho Valdes. This was
the genesis of what would become her trademark style: the blending of
Afro Cuban music with jazz. The collaboration with Eddie and David
began in 2004 when Marialy, then 22 years old, travelled from Cuba
to Bremen, as the pianist for her mother‘s choir, Vocal Leo. A chance
meeting of David and Eddie resulted in a snap decision to organize a concert.
Five days later and with only one rehearsal, they debuted to a packed
auditorium in Bremen, receiving positive reviews and an invitation
to record their first album, Bendiciones (‚Blessings‘, 2005). Since then
they have played numerous sell-out concerts throughout Germany. In addition,
Marialy has recorded a solo album Mi Azul (‚My Blue‘,2006) in the
studios of Radio Bremen.
Thank you…..
When David, Eddie and I began to work on the CD,
I had the feeling it was going to be a very special album for me. The idea to
create freely was fascinating. Although I had some new songs ready, I decided
not to use them, but to start from the beginning, letting the music speak
by itself, without thinking too much. During the recording sessions I felt
that the days of getting to know each other were gone and now we spoke
the same language, and we trusted each other so much, that we were
composing on the spot, together... It was a great feeling. I also wanted to do
something in contrast to my previous albums. I wanted to take myself away from
the music that comes to me naturally, and take risks. I’m very happy with this
album, and with the songs, especially because each one, has it’s own story to tell,
and it’s own personality. I’m also glad that I could work with David and Eddie again.
They are amazing musicians and great friends... Thank you. We also had a small
collaboration from a little boy called Jakob Jehn, (a very small part, but very
important for the album) thank you so much, Jakob.
So... I will let the music be and
follow it’s destiny, just as we do,
every day of our lives.
