When Monty Sunshine and I formed a band in August 1952 our intention was simple...
to have a band which did nothing but play jazz... that is to say a Professional
Band... at the time seeming to be something of a leap in the dark from a financial
point of view... when we heard the results after discovering Pat Halcox (we
had started without a trumpeter!) we began to feel that the future might be
possible!... when Pat changed his mind initially about joining up for this crazy
leap we were fortunate enough to find Ken Colyer returning from New Orleans
and we carried on as we had intended... by May 1954 disagreements meant that
the association with Ken could go no further but luckily Pat had by that time
had enough of Research Chemistry so we were able to get on with the process
of finding out how really to play this wonderful music... The band had already
developed from 3 to 5 to 6 - piece by that time and of course eventually enlarged
itself to include the Skiffle group (adding Dickie Bishop) which was discarded
when we felt that Skiffle music was not going the way we felt...thereafter changes
were quite rare but the band increased from 6 to 7 (John Slaughter, 1964) and
from 7 to 8 (Ian Wheeler, 1979)... It stayed at that size until 2001... Having
had the opportunity to play with a slightly larger ensemble in a few concerts
in 1999, 2000 and 2001 we found the experience so exciting that it was inevitable
that we would find the chance to make the new 11- piece line-up permanent and
that is how the band is and will stay... Shortly before his death our old friend
Sonny Morris found some studio tapes of broadcasts with Monty, Ken and myself
from 1953 and 1954 and we felt this would be a good time to share that discovery.
On the occasion of this ?Jubilee? tour we have now recorded our newest 11-piece
material and last of all we played two pieces with the original 6-piece instumentation
? it was a pleasure! We are now looking forward to the next 50 years! Chris
